Moving to a new blog!

After much thought, I have decided that I will be moving my art blog to another address.
The new blog will be somewhat different, with weekly features on a theme of my artwork, plus a Friday Fellow Artists Feature for other indie artists/designers.
The site will be dedicated only to my new work, new designs.

I will include the link back to this site on my new blog.

I would also like to share links to fellow Zazzle artsists blogs, so if you want to add me and have a frequently updated blog with a focus on Zazzle and other print-on-demand sites, let me know!

I will come back here one last time when the new address is ready so it will be easy for all to find.
Thanks to all those who have visited here over the past several years!

I've Returned to the USA

After 11.5 months living & traveling in the Tibetan exile communities in India & Nepal, I returned just under a week ago to my home in the USA. With the exception of some jet lag fatigue & dizziness that has almost entirely dissipated now, the transition has been fairly smooth.

It is always a somewhat sentimental period. When you live between such radically different cultures and locations, your heart and mind are always stuck somewhere "in between". Even while being grateful for the blessings of where you are, you always miss some aspect of whichever place you have left behind.

I am trying to keep busy. I've been updating, organizing, and adding to my shops on: Zazzle, CafePress, and Greeting Card Universe. I've opened 2 new shops (links to follow) and am getting all my blogs back in shape!

Update: On Extended Travel in Indian Sub-continent

I have been traveling in India and Nepal since mid-October, 2010, working on the Everyday Exile Project and its companion blog, Everyday Exile Photojournalism.

At times I've had limited internet connection, so it has been hard to keep up with all aspects of my online art galleries. I have been working on my Zazzle galleries as able, and have recently shifted my focus to my passion, photography and photojournalism.

I am concentrating on documenting a variety of aspects of everyday life in Tibetan exile communities as well as the local cultures of the Himalayan regions where they have settled since the armed Chinese occupation of Tibet forced many of them to become refugees in 1959.

Hello friends! Hope everyone had a great weekend and is ready for another fabulously creative week!

Most of my work the past three days has been at CrypticFragments deviantART, adding new work and joining in group activity to share images and get feedback.

deviantART is somewhat less user friendly (for the artist, not the visitor) than my other sites, but it does have a few pluses, such as that they make work available on a wide range of products with one upload (ie no need to design multiple products, merely adjust images slightly if necessary).

I have been without a steady internet connection for the past three months, so I have a lot of catching up to do!

My most recent works focus on the Tibetan Buddhist community in McleodGanj (Upper Dharamsala), India, where HH the 14th Dalai Lama has lived in exile since 1959. It is also the seat of the exiled Tibetan Parliament/government, and there is a large Tibetan refugee community there.

Since arriving in McleodGanj, home of the Dalai Lama, the exiled Tibetan gov't and

a large Tibetan refugee community, I have fallen in love with these wonderful

warm people and begun volunteering with a non-profit organization which offers

them English language classes, computer skills courses and more, all free of charge!

Now I have also created a new shop, Support for Tibet, which offers motivational

merchandise as well as other Buddhist art and symbolism gifts.

Items available range from apparel, including tshirts and caps (pictured), plus

two kinds of stickers (round and bumper), fridge magnets, keychains and more!

Fifty percent of the proceeds from the shop go directly to non-profit organizations

locally, while the remaining fifty percent help defray living costs for western volunteers.

Namaste! Greetings from hot noisy and very different Mumbai, India!

I am fortunate to be staying with a friend, here, who has all the comforts of home...well, almost...especially internet access.

It has been too hot to do much outside the home, and there is not a huge amount to do, tourism-wise, in Mumbai anyway, so instead I've been working on some India~inspired design.

About Me:

Born in York PA in 1968, Tammy Winand graduated Dallastown High School in 1986 and briefly studied french and creative writing at West Chester University.

Since 1992 she has lived & worked in central FL; Albuquerque; the Grand Canyon; Grand Teton Nat. Park; & most recently Estes Park CO. She has also lived in Ireland and the UK, & traveled in France.

Her five month journey across northern India will begin in late October 2009.

Artist's Statement:

My work focuses on connections: between the past & present, between diverse cultures, between man & nature, even between color & form.

I am strongly influenced by ancient civilizations, sacred spaces, lifestyles of "exotic" lands, & the power of nature to reclaim what man has built.

My goal is to translate my life experience through symbolism which can be interpreted by a broad audience.

Short Term Art Goals:

With five online galleries featuring my photography and other designs, I hope to at least triple my internet income from sales of my prints in 2010.

I plan to put together a portfolio of 8X10" prints to present to regional galleries once I relocate to the greater Wilmington~Philadelphia area in early 2010.

I will distribute flyers/rack cards featuring my work at local establishments such as coffeehouses and galleries.

While I remain focused on photography, today's announcement by Zazzle that they are now offering stationery to design did give me a chill, as art paper has always been one of my favorite obsessions.

I started my first stationery design collection at Mission to Morocco and will be adding at least 4 new designs by this evening.

After that I will be moving over to open the CrypticFragments stationery collection, followed by Asian art paper designs at AsiaMajor, etcetera.

I took this architectural detail photo of a taqueria, or taco maker shop, just south of Central Avenue (Route 66) in Albuquerque, NM when I lived there a few years back.

New Mexico is full of amazing photo ops. Colorful cultural scenes abound...both Native American (Pueblo as well as Navajo) and Hispanic (Spanish Colonials from Mexico actually settled many of the state's major cities in the late 15th and early 16th centuries.

I loved the yellows and blues in this 1893 Victorian beauty in Mt. Dora, FL, and the stained glass windows.

Mt. Dora is a quaint town known for its antiques shops and fine dining. It sits on the shore of Lake Dora, where you can take a boat ride or stroll out to a miniature lighthouse where locals often fish.

Canyon Storm

The Grand Canyon. The name conjures up sweeping scenes of sandstone, a gaping void, the Colorado River.

I lived and worked at Grand Canyon South Rim for 11 months in 2007-08 and loved capturing those scenes.

One of my favorites was taken during an off-trail hike past Hermits Rest. I followed a "drainage" (water erosion ravine) emerged at the edge of a steep drop-off overlooking Eremita Mesa. While I rested, I noticed that a monsoonal storm had developed in the distance over the inner canyon...and snagged several shots, of which I think the following is best:

Focus on Photography

Since my previous post, I've decided it is more important for me to focus on MY creative passions than to worry about what others want.
I have always loved photography, even as a child.
I create quality, appealing images, even without high tech high end equipment. I have a "good eye", and I love capturing what I see in order to share it with others.

And so, the focus of my art, and therefore of this blog, will be shifting slightly to showcase my photography.

Hey gang...it has been a hectic summer and I have been very busy at my day job. Have not done a lot on Zazzle but recently started re-thinking my focus.

I am not passionate about many of my designs/galleries and that is bad business...
SO, I will be remedying this and shifting my focus to my photography!!!

My main focus has been on photography since my move to Estes Park. My job at trail Ridge Gift Shop keeps me super busy, but on my days off I try to explore the surrounding area. It can be hard to get around w/o a car in this region but I make the most of it.

This photo illustrates why I am calling Estes Park, Colorado "The End of the Trail...how could I ever look elsewhere for a home?! It has all the rugged wilderness I could ever want, it's GREEN (unlike NM& AZ) and it has all the attributes of a real town.
Ok so it's still unsure if Estes or Denver will be the final parking place but at least I know I'm finally in the right state.

All the images I have taken since arriving here are in my Estes Park & RMNP set on flickr. I would love to try an interesting "experiment". New Nature Products from Colorado!

I have been in Estes Park,CO since April 19, now...mainly working. I have only had three days off since starting,so there has not been a lot of time for art, crafts, working on galleries, and so on. I have, however, managed one nine mile hike into a stunningly scenic area called Moraine Park, where I did a lot of photography.
Thus far, two of these images have made their way into my Western Skies gallery.
The first is Marvelous Magpie:

Rusty Relics

"Rusty Relics" is a poster made from an original photography by myself (Tammy Winand). I spotted the scene at the edge of a junkyard in southern New Mexico. If I recall correctly the area was either called old King Mine or Copper King Mine...there was a weird tourist trap fake ghost town there...and a collection of whacked out rusted neglected vehicles and steam radiators, and an old "gypsy caravan" wagon with a giant teddy bear set up at a table inside.

At any rate, this old car caught my eye. It took on a personality...spoke to me with its sad "eyes"...a story of sitting alone, for a long time, waiting for someone to care again.

Two New Peace Tees!

I am so happy to be designing these great messages of hope! I was thinking about the Middle East since yesterday as the Pope (bless him, tho I am not Catholic) visited the Holy Lands starting with Jordan. He called for a free Palestinian State (YAY!) and encouraged all faiths to work together to "tear down the walls" of hate/division.
It made me think that, really, the history of civilization began in that region, and about how important it is (and up to US) to make sure it does not, ironically, end there, as shown in the design below.

As I look forward in my personal life to relocating to Estes on May 19th through mid or late October, I am focusing my energies tighter and tighter. Although all 7 of my Zazzle shops will remain open, Tam's Tees and CrypticFragments will be my priorities, mainly a variety of designs promoting peace.
There will be a wide variety (I have 3 more coming out tonight!)
In support of that the Tees for Peace page will be updated frequently (sometimes daily!) as will my other pages regarding peace and cross-cultural/religious education.

I think I will be able to keep the etsy store open (see my etsy mini in top right sidebar!), as well.

I will remain online after my move, although my available time for it will decrease from 16 hrs/day to roughly 4 hrs/day so I have a lot of "prioritizing" to do...and stick to!
So if you only see me once a week after May 19th, that is why!

Then we'll just have to wait to see what happens come the end of October!

Tees for Peace!

Woo HOO! There is a brand new line/focus for Tam's Tees( front page)...it finally hit me (like a ton of bricks).

If you know me via my Squidoo lenses at all, you know I am passionate about promoting cross-cultural/cross-religion education and understanding with the hopes that maybe even one person might broaden his horizons the tiniest bit more, become more tolerant, more open to those of different religions or nations.

I have always been anti-war. I was born during the Vietnam War and although I have no conscious memories of it being on tv/the news I am sure it somehow affected me (I was 7 years old when it ended).
I have always been for peace in the Middle East and, of course, the rest of the world. I believe there are non-violent ways of solving conflict...of course not that I know what those are or I'd be doing something MORE about it!

Anyway, I am now combining my passion for design/Zazzle with my passion for promoting peace! Tam's Tees already had a few "peace" shirts, but now we are expanding by the day (at least as often as I can!)

Me, the Artist

I don't know why but this afternoon I feel like sharing with you a little about my life as an artist rather than what's new in my shops etc

A typical "art day"...well, first off, I spend way too much time NOT doing art! I get online shortly after waking and get sucked into twitter or emails or surfing interesting sites I call "study" and "research". Sometimes I visit other artists' blogs for visual inspiration or sites devoted to creativity.
Usually I am procrastinating.
I have been told that is "ok"...

After my morning tea and twittering I might sort/organize some beads. As you probably know I have moved/traveled a LOT over the past 10 years so many of my supplies are in storage in other states. I make do with what I can pack along when I relocate or what I spend too much money on as soon as I DO relocate!

I like to play in my art journal but I always feel like I am doing it "wrong". I guess there is no right or wrong, really, but...my art journal is more of a vision board type book or maybe a place to practice. I collage in it, use crayon drawings, etc. Sometimes I paint pages, use stickers or add text. This is NOT a daily art activity.

When I have all my supplies with me I am most likely to be found working on acrylic on canvas paintings (abstracts, landscapes) or mixed media stuff. I love pretty papers & "ephemera" & have a LOT of wood, metal, game piece etc supplies stashed in a garage in Florida. If I'm lucky it will still be there at the end of October & I will be able to go retrieve it all!

My other "passion" is clay...but I am relegated to using air dry varieties or paper pulp imitations for financial reasons. I have at times been passionately into polymer clay art but again, those supplies are back in Florida. Most roommates won't tolerate the smell of pc baking in their oven...

A daily activity IF I go outdoors walking is picking up weird metal objects off the street...rusty washers, discarded nts and bolts, unidentified silvery shapes...I cannot resist them. I have them stored in three states.
While walking I am also obsessed with photo recording interesting sites. I am sometimes afraid people will come after me because I have been known to stop & photograph house/doors/gardens. I also love architectural details on churches, railroads/trains, & urban decay.

About 3-4 days a week I work on one of my seven Zazzle galleries. I also try to list one item in my etsy shop every week.

I am also a creative writer, which means I write, creatively, but not necessarily (at this point) with the goal of publication. Writing was once my primary creative passion. Although I am still in love with words, connecting words, alphabets both ancient and modern, and creating poetic sentences & descriptive paragraphs, I am no longer actively (for now) trying to earn a living from that aspect of my creativity.

I like to read books about creativity, look at stacks of decor & jewelry/paper crafting/mixed media/painting magazines and books (usually over tea or a breve at a bookstore cafe).

I spend more time admiring other peoples' art than I do creating my own!

So...there you have it. A not-quite-complete look at the workings of MY creative spirit.

Cool New Business Cards!

I am still hard at work on the CrypticFragments gallery, folks...and the latest things to develop are the Crazy Burst design line (also available on apparel at Tam's Tees) and a new line of business cards (growing quickly).
In fact the new business cards are my main focus at least for the next several days.

After that, as said in the previous post, I will be moving over to work on Asia Major!

At some point in the near future I will be adding a new line of typographic art posters/prints, as well. This idea is still in the early development phase.

Outside of Zazzle, I am designing some new jewelry pieces for Abundant Treasures, where I work part time, and my etsy shop. It may be a few weeks until they are listed on etsy but believe me they will be worth the wait!

As you probably already know I have been hard at work catching up since getting back to daily WiFi.

I have made several additions and changes to Western Skies western/southwestern/Native American gallery.

Today I am hard at work re-organizing CrypticFragments, my original Zazzle design gallery. You now have until first thing Friday, May 1st to get any of the products in the Sale! Discontinued category. After 9am MTN time Friday they will be gone forever!

New Saguaro/Desert Items at Western Skies!

I have a mild obsession with saguaro cacti. They look so friendly, always raising an arm in greeting to passers-by, waving, even hugging one another!
On a recent visit to the Sonoran Desert (southern AZ) I took numerous photos of saguaro as well as various types of cholla, barrel cacti, etc
These are slowly making their way into the inventory at Western Skies!

If you love cacti, desert landscapes or the west and southwest in general you should pop in today and have a look!
Great new things are coming. I have a full series of new Kokopelli items which will hopefully be up by the end of the weekend (a few already there) as well as new Denver/Colorado items in the weeks and months ahead.

Just a quick entry to let everyone know that I have arrived safely in Denver, Colorado!
I have not explored beyond my immediate neighborhood (DU area...roughly speaking) with the exception of Antiques Row, where my roommate runs a great religiosa and eclectic antique Americana shop called Abundant Treasures! The address is 1421 S. Broadway Denver and I will be working there part time.
Today the plan today is to restage the shop with some AWESOME new displays!

9 Days to Denver!

I am both excited and terrified at my impending move to Denver. The woman I am renting the room from seems so nice online and we got along well on the phone but there is always that element of not knowing. I must learn to trust more and push through unfounded fears!
In both my everyday life and my arts (of ALL kinds).

If you happen to be an artist (visual or written word) in the Denver area who would like to connect do not hesitate to drop a response here! I will be living in the Denver University area. I am hoping to attend some writers groups and maybe visual arts events also but will be on a super limited budget...also I will only be there (as of what I know NOW) until May 20, when I head for Estes Park and my job at Rocky Mtn Nat Park....

I am writing again (see Aurelia blog link) as well as doing air dry clay work (LOVING it! so smooth so tactile!) and still a bit of painting.

Entries may be a bit erratic for the next 2 weeks but hopefully I can get back in the rhythm of things by April 28th or so!

Online Marketing Break

Just a quick note to let you all know that, while my shops all remain open, I am taking a brief hiatus from actively promoting them.
I have a variety of paper craftin (envelopes, notecards, etc) and acrylic painting projects going on at the moment and am hoping to shift my focus more in that direction over the months ahead.

As usual, my life is in a state of flux. I am preparing for an impending (temporary) relocation to Denver in advance of starting my summer seasonal job in Estes Park/RMNP.

In the meantime, there are a few new items at Tam's Tees as well as at CrypticFragments etsy.

The Canyon Collection (new, spring 2009)

New and hot for spring 2009 is The Canyon Collection, so named because all the pieces in it were created while I was living at the Grand Canyon.

The collection is themed around coral, carnelian, sodalite, and lapis...all orange and blue...and all highly prized and used by cultures since the dawn of civilization, from Sumeria and Egypt to the desert southwestern US!

The pieces are all one of a kind and handmade (by me).

The pieces will be added to Cryptic Fragments etsy one at a time over the coming week.

Delftware Inspired Design

For the past 20 years, I have been infatuated with the look of blue and white pottery, from the transferware designs of the Staffordshire potteries in England (including the famous Blue Willow pattern) to the famous Delft pieces from Holland.
Delftware has been around since the 15th Century AD!

Now I have created a design line inspired by this highly collectible and cherished style.
The original pottery featured design elements such as florals, peacocks, windmills, nature scenes and swirls. I have attempted to convey the same feel through the simplified images I have created.

Currently 4 different versions are available in my Delftware Inspired line at CrypticFragments Zazzle gallery, on a range of products from mugs and magnets to greeting cards and canvas bags. The designs are elegant enough to use as wedding invitations and postage!
Simply insert your names or details between the design elements by clicking on the "customize" feature!

My new line of greeting/notecards at CrypticFragments is called "Imagine" and features a series of 5 different typographical and graphic layouts using that word. (click here to go directly to the greeting card page).
The backgrounds and text are in bold black and white and attempt to evoke a sense of wonder, imagination and hope.

In addition to being featured on cards, these designs are also available on envelope seals, US postage, coffee mugs, magnets, and more.

The customer is encouraged to click the "customize" option in the shop in order to experiment with different background colors (we think they look best on black or dark red). All cards can be personalized with added text or even images.

As I delve further into typography, I am also getting braver and exploring using transparencies. With what limited knowledge I have of Inkscape, I managed to create what is, to me, a pleasing combination of colors and textures.

I have always been passionate about typography/lettering. I think fonts are fun!
For some reason, though, I have done very little work involving it...and am in the process of a series of experiments involving letters, now.
The alphabet is a wonderful thing! Let's not waste it!

Having started a "real" job this past week, I have not had as much time, or energy, to devote to my own creativity or blogging. I am not happy, but I know that a paycheck is mandatory...and I am grateful to be working, although I'd prefer to have more flexibility in scheduling.

An interesting site I found recently tells me that, apparently, this blog is worth more than I am seeing in earnings from it!

Recent Projects

Since arriving in Arizona & moving into my little room, I have not been entirely inactive, creatively speaking.
I have not been very active with my Zazzle shops while I was offline most of the preceding 7 days, and am also waiting to see how fast (or indeed whether) they work out the recent payment problems they've been having.

Most recently I've been doing a series of photos inspired by the 114 trains which pass through Flagstaff daily (one block from my door). Freight trains, mostly, w/one eastbound and one westbound Amtrak passenger train daily as well. Trains, train tracks, and the train station will be the focus of this set of images. There are a few currently in the Arizona set of my flickr acct. towards the end...

I also took pictures of more handmade ethnic jewelry and added some listings to my etsy shop to replace the ones which recently sold!

Last but not least, I have begun experimenting in two types of air-dry "clay". The first, DAS Prang, is not really a clay at all, from what I can tell, but a fast drying paper pulp product which molds well but does not have the properties of natural clay which I was hoping for (ie you cannot join coils/pieces together w/tradit methods). So I am building a series of spirals with it, which I will paint after they dry (in roughly 24 hrs from creation).
Of course, this means buying a set of paintbrushes and more paints, which really aren't in the budget at the moment, but...I will suffer for my art, I suppose.
The second experiment has not as yet begun...but will be with Crayola natural air dry clay, which I hope will be better suited to coiling & joining.

missing my creative supplies

Today I have really been missing my "physical" creative supplies... I found myself longing for polymer clays and paints, mixed media "ephemera" and even for crayons and paper.
Alas, they are all in storage, mostly in other cities and states.

Most of you probably know I am on the verge of making my eighth cross-country move since March 2007 come Tuesday.
That kind of life is not conducive to creativity.
At least not in the short term.
When you can only afford to take the bare basics with you... it means starting over again, again and again.
Re-purchasing creative supplies every time.
Storing everything created during any given period in one location with a friend or family member..or selling it, or even giving it away.
Yes, I have long been a master of releasing...although the deepest parts of me are fighting that this time.

I do not want to ever have to do this again.
It's too hard on my soul.

I want a place to call my own.
I want a place where I can decorate and create and feel safe, secure and stable. (what a concept!)

Yes, I love traveling. But I want a place to leave from and come back TO, not this continual cycle of having to move to a place in order to experience it because a vacation is too expensive!
...insanity...

Please help me visualize a home & studio where I am surrounded by all my creating supplies & can truly enjoy being an artist!
Whether that place is in Flagstaff or at Grand Canyon South Rim...I just need to KNOW & be able to get on with life before it's too late.

After several months of shying away from etsy, for various reasons, I finally revisited, did a little updating and re-working, and relisted 6 jewelry pieces.

My jewelry work is inspired by ethnic and regional designs from such locations as the southwestern US and Central Asia (Turkoman, Kuchi, etc) as well as antique pieces from the Roman Empire, and various Middle Eastern areas.

In the near future I will be photographing and adding various other designs which have sat neglected in storage during my numerous cross-country moves over the past few years.

Here is a quote MoonMan3D (a Zazzle designer) recently posted on his (her?) gallery front page:

"There are 8,344,759,05 items for sale on Zazzle at this time The human mind has a hard time picking 1 item out of 3 ! Most people look at their favorite piece of art for 3 seconds !" (paraphrased to correct spelling and grammar)

So...would you say Zazzle is purely a numbers game?
I personally do not believe that...as if it were the case, the likelihood of myself or any other designer with small, amateur shops ever selling when competing against big name musicians or brand galleries would be virtually none.

Even with all the "advertising" I do, I still manage to eek out a small monthly income between my 10 galleries...enough to buy some groceries or treat myself to a dinner out or two (occasionally more, and hopefully increasingly so!)

In any event, it's still nice to think that small individually operated design galleries CAN make sales on Zazzle (and other p-o-ds).
But as MoonMan also suggests, it can't hurt to rate the products/designs you see (read "LOVE") in your co-Zazzlers galleries with 4-5 stars, and to leave comments.
The more exposure the better.

How about a friendly challenge, fellow Zazzle bloggers?
Go find and star rate and comment at least 3 designs/designers you never have before...

Okay I confess...I am absolutely befuddled by the set-up of Imagekind.com's artist galleries and shops.
First I had to figure out how to get images uploaded (the link was not immediately evident).
Then I had to upload...you can only upload one image at a time unless you download site-specific software (which my poor little laptop cannot handle more of)
After that, it asks you unclear questions regarding cropping for greeting cards...and you have to hunt out the links to list it and price it for sale as other products (prints/posters, etc)

Now, granted, I am not the world's brainiest when it comes to using these kinds of sites. Ease of use for the technically impaired is important to me (one of the reasons I love Zazzle so much is because it is so easy to navigate and organize.
Anyway... I managed to get 2 images in there which are available as greeting cards, and one which is being offered as a print/poster.

When you click that link, it should take you to a page with an image of some stacked photos on the right hand side of the page which is labelled CrypticFragments gallery. You click on the top image and it should open the gallery to show you all the images I have available, at which point you select the one you want to use and what product you would like it to appear on.

My new greeting card shop is now open (under development) at Greeting Card Universe.
As of now my designs are still pending "approval", however from what I understand they should be going live within 24 hours.
